Week 3 Waiver Wire Wonders
As a Devonta Freeman and Joe Mixon owner, it hasn't exactly been a dream start to the fantasy season for me. I'm still doing well thanks to a good draft and a deep wide receiver group, but when injuries strike, finding talent on the waiver wire becomes even more important. This week, I'm not just looking for a good stash. I want some real value that I can plug and play and get immediate return on my investment. I'm was happy adding Phillip Lindsay last week, and I'm ready to hit it big again.
Whether you're in the same boat or you're looking for the next breakout, I have a few players you should consider. Keep in mind, I'm only looking at players with less than 50% ownership in redraft leagues. Also, this should go without saying, but if you see someone on your waiver wire that you KNOW shouldn't be there, please do us all a favor and grab them.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, TB - Yahoo 23% owned, ESPN 31% owned
Fitzpatrick showed he's legitimate fantasy stud, torching the Eagles defense to the tune of 402 yards and 4 scores. If he or DeSean Jackson is still on the wire, grab them now. I told you to grab them last week! I want to see more swag from post game press conferences.
Blake Bortles, JAX - Yahoo 28% owned, ESPN 10% owned
In the AFC title rematch, Bortles lit up New England, throwing for 377 yards and 4 scores, while adding 35 yards on the ground. He hit four different receivers for touchdowns and didn't get sacked once. Bortles should be rostered, especially since he's got a decent matchup against the Titans in week 3.
Andy Dalton, CIN - Yahoo 27% owned, ESPN 18% owned
I've been impressed with Andy Dalton so far this year and I think that's due to Bill Lazor's offense. Sure, it also helps when any pass to AJ Green gets taken to the house. Even though Dalton struggled in the second half in a win against Baltimore, I wouldn't mind seeing Dalton in your QB slot against Carolina if you're desperate.
Austin Ekeler, LAC - Yahoo 44% owned, ESPN 43% owned
It hasn't been against elite defenses, but Ekeler has earned a spot on this list because he's earned an important role in the LA backfield. He's tallied 98+ yards from scrimmage each week and could ascend to RB1 status should Melvin Gordon ever miss any time for any reason.
Corey Clement, PHI - Yahoo 22% owned, ESPN 23% owned
This was the week where running backs rushed for low yardage but made their hay in the passing game. Clement was one of those RB's, and took advantage of a back injury to Ajayi, filling in nicely by collecting a rushing TD and five receptions for 55 yards. Monitor Ajayi this week, but I'd absolutely be looking to add Clement where I could.
Javorius Allen, BAL - Yahoo 8% owned, ESPN 19% owned
"Buck" Allen has value in PPR formats as the top handcuff to Alex Collins. But Collins hasn't exactly impressed as the Ravens' lead back, so Allen continues to get playing time. I can see a timeshare going forward, with Allen drawing Flacco's eye near the goaline.
Giovanni Bernard, CIN - Yahoo 28% owned, ESPN 39% owned
With Joe Mixon out of the picture for 2-4 weeks, Bernard and maybe Mark Walton will see the field early and often. I'd rather have Bernard, who has proven in the past he can be an RB1 when featured. Bernard had 95+ yards from scrimmage in three of the five games without Mixon in 2017 and Cincy wants to use the running back in its offensive scheme.
Keelan Cole, JAX - Yahoo 49% owned, ESPN 48% owned
How is he still available on the waiver wire in a majority of leagues? No worries, because you're going to take advantage and add him this week. Maybe even before Lee went down, Cole was projected as the top receiving option in Jacksonville and now he's the top WR waiver wire pickup of the week if available. I would spend 25% (maybe more) of my FAAB to get him on my team. He's worth it.
John Brown, BAL - Yahoo 25% owned, ESPN 24% owned
In the last two games, Brown has drawn 14 looks, and caught seven balls for 136 yards and two touchdowns. You can't deny this type of production, and he's got a few interesting matchups against Denver, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland coming up. He deserves a spot on your team.
Antonio Callaway, CLE - Yahoo 7% owned, ESPN 4% owned
As Josh Gordon departs for New England, Antonio Callaway finds himself in the Browns starting lineup. With a good preseason under his belt, and an 81-yard, 1 TD day against New Orleans on Sunday where he played 80% of snaps, he could put up top-24 numbers with Tyrod Taylor/Baker Mayfield.
Albert Wilson, MIA - Yahoo 1% owned, ESPN 3% owned
The Miami offense isn't going to light the world on fire, but I think I'd like to take a chance on Wilson. My colleague Noah Hills is calling for the Albert Wilson breakout this season, and this could be the start of something special. He got 4 targets in the first game against Tennessee, and 5 targets with a score this week. He could be free in your league. Put $1 on him.
D.J. Moore, CAR - Yahoo 29% owned, ESPN 23% owned
When Greg Olsen got injured, I thought that Moore should be a beneficiary in the offense, and Week 2 sort of confirmed my belief. While his target volume was still low, a 51-yard, highlight reel TD has got to pique your interest. He gets Cincinnati in week 3, and with Rivera wanting to get Moore the ball more, I recommend taking a look at the rookie.
Jesse James, PIT - Yahoo 11% owned, ESPN 3% owned
Thanks to Big Ben, The Outlaw had a career game against the Chiefs, catching all 5 targets for 138 yards and a score. The Steelers are like a bad reality TV show right now, but with a porous defense, I'm taking any productive part of the Pittsburgh offense. Sure, James could goose you just as easily as he could give you Sunday's performance, but I'd still play him over 90% of the Tight Ends on the waiver wire right now.
O.J. Howard - Yahoo 68% owned, ESPN 21% owned
I'm breaking my own ownership percentage rule (on Yahoo) for Howard here. He's just too dominant of an athlete to leave him on the wire when the Tampa offense is scorching the earth. I love Howard this week against Pittsburgh, mostly because the Steelers gave up two TDs to Travis Kelce this past Sunday. I fully endorse a Howard plug-and-play this Monday night.
